Kate Elizabeth Talbot b1867

Kate Elizabeth Talbot lead a colourful life, born in 1867 in Barrow, Suffolk, she emigrated to Australia with her parents in 1877. She married Richard Grant in on 26 Apr 1887 (1887/C420) at St. Johns Church, Dalby, Queensland. Richard was 43 and Kate was 20. They had 3 children together, then Richard died in 1894. She ten took up with her stepson Charles Grant, and had two children by him, until they split up and Charles married Frances Jane Kineavy in 1912. It is difficult to follow her life after this,but she did not die until 1944.

Kate Elizabeth Talbot was born in England about 1867, the daughter of George and Drusilla (nee Jolly) who were married on 25 Oct 1862 in Barrow, Suffolk, England. That information is contained in the parish records of the Barrow, Church of England.

1871 England Census Kate was listed as 5 Years old. Her father George was 28 and mother Drusilla 27. Also listed is a Sister Jessie 7 years old and a brother George aged 7 months. The address given is in Railway Hut 3 in the town of Lazonby, Cumberland which may be Kate’s birthplace and it must have been a very large or very crowded house as on this census 8 lodgers are listed. George and all the lodgers are railway laborers.

1877 the Talbot family emigrated to Australia. George left England in 1873 on the 'Woodlark' and immigrated to Australia. Drucilla and the children followed leaving England on the 6 October 1876, also on the 'Woodlark' and arrived in Brisbane on the 25h January 1877.

1883 Kate gave birth to a girl when aged 16 called Ellen Elizabeth and was know to the family as Aunt Dolly. Ellen Elizabeth Talbot was born to Kate Elizabeth on 28 March 1883 with no father listed. I don't know who raised Ellen Elizabeth but she was considered part of the family as my mum use to go visit her whenever mum went to Toowoomba. So I think it safe to assume she was raised by Kate and Richard.

Ellen Elizabeth Talbot (and she uses the name Talbot when she marries so one would assume the father was not Richard Grant) married Christopher Gourlie Maule on 19 July 1905 and they had two children; William Andrew Maule born on 16 April 1906 (and who later married Dorothy May) and Edna Elizabeth Maule born on 3 May 1913 (and who later married a Lipp in about 1930, and died 27 Aug 1995 at Toowoomba). Christopher Maule died on 21 August 1938.

1887 Kate married Richard Grant on 26 April 1887. Richard and Kate’s children were

1894 Richard Grant died on 18 February 1894 and some time after this Kate took up with Charles Grant. From this union was born Ivy Daisy Grant on 21 March 1898 and Gladys on 7 May 1904.

Richard and Kate had three children as follows;

Richard Grant died 18 Feb 1894 in the Toowoomba Hospital aged 51 years. Richard Grant was buried side by side with his wife Mary Grant (plot no F9815).

After Richard Grant’s death in 1894, his widow Kate Elizabeth Grant had a further two children by Richard’s son (by his first marriage to Mary Bell) Charles. Charles & Kate never married, as indeed they were prohibited from doing by the "Table of Kindred and Affinity" of the church. At the time of the first childs birth, Kate was 31 and Charles was 24.

Kate Grant (nee Talbot) appears to have lived with her daughter Gladys in her later years. Gladys Jones (nee Grant) lived in Keats Street Cannon Hill. "Every Thursday Mum (Annie Ryan) and Molly would take us to Aunty Gladys place for lunch. The first things said always included, 'how's George Glady? Oh he's alright Annie'. But I never ever saw George, only Mudda (Kate Elizabeth Grant) who was mostly kept in her room as she was a bit funny and she must be the smallest woman I ever saw. I suppose these days it would be said that Kate had severe dementia."
