I believe that my Pughs only moved to the Peniarth Arms in Llanfihangel-y-Pennant in 1881, so on first examination my branch of the Pughs appear to have no connection to Ty'n y llan. The plaque to Hugh Pugh the Joiner Ty'n Llan is dated 1805 on the photo. So some Pughs did live here earlier, but I have yet to find a connection.
The house was a two up two down stone building. The bread oven, which is still there was outside the back door. This sign is above the front door.
Our Pugh family did not go to even near here until around 1851 to 1853, when Evan Pugh b1826, son of Richard Pugh b1788, went to work in the slate quarries round Corris from Dolgellau. The only direct connection remotely possible would have to have been way back to Richard b1788, having this Hugh as a brother, given the man would have had to have been at least 20 by 1805, and probably older. Census records show a Hugh Pugh who is probably a brother to Richard Pugh b1788
From Eleri Rowlands My guess, for what it's worth, is that my family, having moved to Ty'n Llan in 1837 or so (I haven't been to the records office yet - must go) lived there until Evan, born 1812, died and Mary could not carry on alone. I saw the Hugh Pugh, joiner above the door in Ty'n Llan and since my Evan, (born 1812) called his first son Hugh, that the joiner could have been Evan's father. Of course my grandfather was also Hugh. By 1861, my great grandfather Owen was working on a farm nearby, Mary is now in a nearby cottage, Caeberllan and is described as a pauper. Owen had moved to Dolgellau before 1868, since he married Mary Williams then, who eventually inherited a farm, Tanygader, which they lived in. My grandfather, Hugh Arthur Pugh, was born in 1880, in Tanygader, and came down to Cardiff to work, found my grandmother from Llandeilo there, married and had my father in 1918. I was born in Cardiff too.
Evan Pugh, above, b1816, was living in this house by 1842 when his third child Evan was born on September 16th, 1842. According to records he was born in Ty’n Llan. This child died on June 27th, the same year and Evan and Mary called their next son, born on October 5th, 1846, Evan, after him. On November 6th, 1846, Evan the husband, a joiner, died.
By the next census 1851, Mary is the head of the home. She is a pauper. She has a lodger, an elderly lady living with her and a visitor, maybe her sister (Margaret Lewis).
By 1861 it seems that Mary is living in Caeberllan Cottage a few houses up the road. She is now 50 years old and describes herself as ‘formerly house servant’. She has her niece Elizabeth Humphreys, aged 18, living with her.

Census information
1841 Census

The 1841 census only shows "Llanfihangel Village" and does not actually give addresses within the village. Also ages were "rounded" by decree in the census down to put the population into cohorts, 25 here only means "between 25 and 29". Their gravestones show actual births as in 1811 or 1812.
There is no sign of the parents of Evan Pugh - though there are 2 Hugh Pugh, living in Towyn (that is where Evan Pugh's wife Mary above was born). though neither has the profession of joiner as in the photo of Ty'n y llan.
However the birth certificate of their child Evan Pugh born in Sept 1842 does give their address as Ty'n y llan. And the father, Evan Pugh, has his profession given variously as "wheelwright" "carpenter" and "joiner" on birth certs of his children.
1851 census

Evan Pugh died in 1846, leaving his wife a widow. Again there are no actual addresses, only "village" for Mary. The birth certs of her children give her maiden name as "Lewis", so one assumes that "Margaret Lewis" was her sister
1861 census

The first census with addresses, and Mary is living in a cottage in the village. A farmer called Hugh Jones is living in Ty'n y llan
1871 census

Mary is still in same cottage and Hugh Jones still in Ty'n y llan. Mary died in 1873. My own Pugh family are not yet in the village, they only appear in the 1881 census at the Peniarth Arms (which is owned by a Simpson Jones in 1871)
