Robert Pugh 1847

The only Robert Pugh birth around 1814 on IGI is Robert baptised 16 Nov 1814 Talyllyn to Samuel and Sarah Pugh. This is the only child baptised here to this couple (but the records are only transcribed from 1813 on). However no other Samuel Pughs emerge in IGI. I do not feel that this is the birth that I am looking for as he always had "Llangelynin" in all the censuses as his place of birth. There are 50 Pughs living in Llangelynin in the 1841 census, so they are a well established family in Llangelynin, and are not recent "imigrants" for further afield like Dolgellau.

Their son Robert Pugh, who later marries Mary Ann Pugh ("our" Mary Ann, the daughter of Evan Pugh 1826), was born in Penegoes in 1847. He lived with his parents in Pennal in 1861 census before they moved to Abergynolwyn before the 1871 census. They carried on living there, Robert lived with his parents until they died, He then married Mary Ann Pugh, who does not appear to be a relation, in 1894, and carried on living in the same house in Pandy, Abergynolwyn.

1841 census. There are 2 possibilities in the 1841 census. Either this Robert in Talyllyn

or this one in Dolgellau

Given the vagaries of the 1841 census it is difficult to see which is he, but given this place of birth, Llangelynnin, and the fact that he is in Penegroes (near Machynlleth) in 1851 and in Pennal, near Machynlleth in 1861 and in Abergynolwyn in 1871, my guess would be the man at Talyllyn is the man we are seeking. Apart from saying he is an agricultural labourer, and pointing to perhaps some sibblings, it is difficult to say more than this.

1851 census Robert and Susanah Pugh are living in Penegroes (near Machynlleth) with their 4 children - Owen 5, Hugh 5, Robert 3 and Edward 1. This points to a marriage about 1844 Robert senior is given as born in Clynin (this is Llangelynnin). He was working as a lead miner there, probably at Dylife Lead Mines "Dylife sits high in the Cambrian Mountains on the road between Llanidloes & Machynlleth in the county of Montgomeryshire in mid-Wales. Mining at this location has been attributed as going back as far as Roman times..." It is about 6 miles SE of Penegroes.

1861 census. Robert senior is living at Pennal, near Machynlleth

1871 census. Robert senior is living at Abergynolwyn.

1881 census. Robert and Susanah are still living at Abergynolwyn.Their son Robert is still living with them, as are 4 other o their sons and 2 "visitors" whom one assumes are relations.

1891 census. Robert Pugh b1815 has died and his widow Susannah is living alone with her son Robert b1847. Next door is their son John R Pugh running thhe Railway Inn in Abergynolwyn (by the 1901 census John R Pugh is a widower lodging at the Flag Inn in Pennal. From the information from Canada, I assume that he went on to run the Peniarth Arms in Bryncrug, and died there in 1916)

1901 census Robert Pugh 1847 has now married Mary Ann Pugh and they are living in the same house in Pandy, Abergynolwyn. As far as I can see they are not related.
