Analysis of information on Richard Pugh

It is very difficult to get to who exactly "our" Richard Pugh was, the only way will be indirectly

• I believe we are looking for a "Richard Pugh" as that is what his son Evan's marriage certificate says. That marriage is the correct one, so Evan's father has to be Richard Pugh.
• 
• From census entries I believe that the 1851 census entry for Evan Pugh, age: 24, born: Dolgelley, son of Richard Pugh, age 63, and Ann Pugh,age 63 is "our" Evan. This census entry gives Richard born Llanfachraeth, Merionethshire as a Labourer. They were living at Lodgefach, Crogennant, Dolgelly.
• Also listed in the house in the 1851 census is William Pugh 3 (Grandson of Richard Pugh) born Dolgelly. He is listed in the 1861 census as living in Corris. His mother Jane then age 37, ie born circa 1824, (born Llanfachreth) has married an Edward Evans. Her father is "Richard Pugh, labourer"

• Confusingly two Richard Pughs married an Ann in 1817. 1817 Richard Pugh a bachelor of Llanfachreth parish marries Ann Evans Spinster of the same parish by Licence on 19th Nov 1817 witnessed by William Pugh and Hugh Humphreys. To muddy the waters there is another marriage on 25 Oct 1817 of Richard Pugh of Dolgellau to Ann Lewis of Ffestiniog at Ffestiniog. So two Richard Pugh to Ann marriages, either of which could be our man. The Ffestiniog marriage produces no children baptised in Ffestiniog though this does not necessarily mean they had no children, and also ties in with the Richard Pugh that ends up in the Ffestiniog workhouse.
• Families would not necessarily baptise all of their children. If one looks at those children born to "Richard & Ann Pugh" at either Dolgellau or Llanfachreth, then there are at least 2 and possibly 3 couples with the same pair of names Richard & Anne.
• Of the 7 Richard Pugh in the 1841 census from Merioneth, we can discount Gwyddelwern (near Corwen, Richard Pugh married to Lawry) as too far away, also Towyn (12 miles N. of Aberystwyth) where Richard Pugh is married to Elizabeth, and Llanenddwyn north of Barmouth where Richard Pugh is married to Mary. Our Evan Pugh was born in Llanfachreth, and his father in Llanfachreth or Dolgellau
• Of the 3 Richard Pugh living in Dolgellau, Richard & Anne born around 1776 are unlikely to be the parents of Evan born 1826. This leaves only the first two Richard Pugh in 1841 census below, one born circa 1785 and the other circa 1795. Both are Agricultural Labourers, which is what Evan Pugh's father was. Looking at them next..
• Taking Richard Pugh 55 (Agricultural Labourer) has no wife and two daughters Jane Pugh 20 & Ann Pugh 15. These cannot be the sisters of "our" Evan Pugh, as their ages are wrong. I believe I have established that the "correct" Ann was 20 at this time and the correct Jane was 15.
• Take Richard Pugh (age 45) & Ann Pugh (age 45) with children Richard age 10, Margaret age 7 and Morris age 5. Living at Upper Mill St, Dolgelley. This means his age is between 45 and 49, and that he was born between roughly 1790 and 1795. It could be our man. I have not been able to establish any link to 1851 census Richard & Evan household, or link the 3 children to our tree.
• A Richard Pugh dies 4 March 1848 age 62, so this could be one of our Richards, and could not be man in 1851 census. A Richard Pugh dies in Dolgellau aged 75 on 22 April 1850, so could not be man in 1851 census. However an Anne Pugh who dies Mar 7 1859 is a possible death, which would leave the Richard in the 1851 census a widower, and could be therefore the Richard Pugh ending in Ffestiniog workhouse.
• The Richard Pugh of 1851 census, born circa 1788, family consists of Richard Pugh & wife Ann (he born Llanfachreth, she Dolgellau),with son Evan and grandson William Pugh.And I can prove that this William is the illegitimate son of Jane Pugh, born circa 1824
• Aled Pugh suggested that perhaps one could get at his origins via the birth of an illegitimate child to his grand-daughter Mary Ann Pugh (daughter of Evan Pugh b1826, who stayed with Pughs in London whom could have been cousins. However I think I have proved that they were not cousins. I have not been able to establish a relationship between Mary Ann Pugh and the Pughs whom she was staying with in London when she had her child. She certainly got around, and had 2 illegitimate children (William Pugh and John Evans Pugh), before marrying.
• My research on William Pugh, illegitimate son of Jane Pugh shows me that she is a daughter of the Richard & Anne Pugh whose grandson William was living with them in in the 1851 census. And the balance of probability is that she is the Jane in the Llanfachreth baptism registers. If she is that Jane (the age is exactly correct) then the three (or perhaps 4) other children born to the same parents in that register would be her siblings. Note though that there is no Evan born to that couple in Llanfachreth in 1826.
• I have also tracked down another child of Richard's. Ann Pugh who married William Jones in Bala in 1852 aged 32 (ie born 1820). This again ties with the Ann Pugh born Llanfachraeth to Richard & Ann Pugh in 1820 Llanfachreth registers. The Bala census information gives her place of birth as Llanfachreth. and her marriage certificate gives her father as Richard Pugh, labourer.
  
• The only baptism registered as Evan Pugh in or around 1826 is in Dolgellau to Evan (rather than Richard) and Anne of Brithgoom. I have assumed that this is not our Evan (the age is right but the father wrong)

Evidence

If we consider all the possible Richard Pughs that could have been "our" Richard Pugh in the 1841 census it is those below. That is a man born between 1780 and 1805. This presumption is based on "our" Evan Pugh being born 1826 (from his census and marriage information), and that he was born in Llanfachreth, with a father Richard Pugh. The balance of probability is that "our" Richard Pugh is one of the two living in Dolgellau below

Further if we look at the 1851 census the only Richard Pugh born Llanfachreth or Dolgellau possible is the one listed. Problematically none of the 1841 Richards tie up with the sole 1851 Richard in Dolgellau.

1851 Census

Only 5 Richard Pugh born 1790 (+ or - 10 years) come up, and I have used the one below for "our" Richard. The only one born in Llanfachreth or Dolgellau.

They have a Evan Pugh born circa 1826, which is consistent with his own census returns and marriage certificate in later life. I would have expected Evan Pugh's father to be alive in 1851, as Evan's marriage cert in 1853 does not not say the father is "deceased".

So if this family is "our" Pugh family, then this is probably not the Richard who ends up in the Ffestiniog Workhouse, on the grounds that his wife Ann is reported as born in Dolgellau, and not in Ffestiniog (though the Ffestiniog marriage does not give the wife's place of birth, only her parish at marriage). My assumption being that the Richard Pugh who married in Ffestiniog, is the fellow that ended up in the Ffestiniog workhouse.

We can trace William age 3, grandson back to his mother being Jane Pugh, the daughter of a Richard & Anne Pugh, baptised in Llanfachreth in 1824.

1. Birth Cert to get more on Richard Pugh - William Pugh was grandson living with him in 1851 census - however I know that his mother was Richard Pugh (the one in 1851 census) daughter Jane. So I don't think this would tell me any more
